The Maharashtra government has approved the allocation of 255 acres of salt pan land in Mumbai for slum rehabilitation and the relocation of project-affected persons (PAP). This move aims to address the city’s growing housing crisis and provide relief to thousands of slum dwellers by enabling their relocation to safer and more permanent housing structures.
Mumbai, often referred to as the financial capital of India, faces a significant challenge with overcrowded slums housing millions of people. These slums are often located in unsafe, hazardous areas. The decision to use the salt pan land, which has remained underutilized, is part of the government's efforts to tackle these housing issues while ensuring sustainable urban development.
The land will be primarily used for constructing affordable housing for slum dwellers as well as families displaced by infrastructure projects across the city. The decision comes after long-standing discussions about repurposing unused land in Mumbai for the public good.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed optimism, stating that this move would not only improve living conditions for thousands of families but also contribute to the broader vision of creating a more inclusive and resilient city. The government is also expected to collaborate with private developers to accelerate construction efforts and ensure timely delivery of housing units.
